Insulin Resistance Blood Test Lab to be performed in a nearby Quest Labs (Includes lab interpretation and 30 minute over phone/zoom consultation - You are getting a 30 minute consultation with Dr. Hartman for at least $20 off with this lab test).

Markers tested and notes on how they relate to Insulin resistance:

  • Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT), Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) - Both ALT and AST are released into the blood as liver cells are damaged or die. Insulin resistance is one of the ways this happens. Increased ALT and AST show increased risk for fatty liver and metabolic disease
  • Albumin, Albumin/Globulin Ratio, Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP), BUN/Creatinine Ratio, Blood Urea Nitrogen, Calcium, Carbon Dioxide, Chloride, Creatinine, Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate, Globulin (Calculated), Potassium, Protein, Total, Sodium, Total Bilirubin (all of these are part of the Comprehensive Metabolic Panel)
  • Gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) - Another liver enzyme that, if elevated, shows oxidative stress in the body. High GGT is indicative of increased risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, cancer, liver disease, and premature death
  • Glucose (Blood) -high fasting glucose level is a sign of insulin resistance blocking glucose from getting into our cells
  • HDL Cholesterol - HDL is often referred to as the “good” cholesterol because it helps remove cholesterol from the blood vessels and carries it back to the liver for processing and elimination from the body. Low levels of HDL is not good at all and can show insulin resistance.

  • Hemoglobin A1c (hbA1C)- one of the main screening tests for diabetes type 2. Shows the level of glycated (stuck to sugar) red blood cells over a 3-4 month period.

  • Insulin - Probably the most important thing tested in this panel. An elevated fasting insulin level is a warning signal that your cells may be struggling, indicating an imbalance in energy regulation
  • LDL Cholesterol, Non-HDL Cholesterol, Total Cholesterol, Total Cholesterol / HDL Ratio - used in conjunction with HDL and Triglycerides to determine excess sugars in the blood causing the liver to make too much fat and cholesterol
  • Triglycerides - Key marker! High triglycerides are almost certainly a warning sign that you are eating too much sugar, refined carbs, and/or alcohol, and probably not engaging in enough physical activity
  • Uric Acid - excess uric acid generates oxidative stress that disturbs mitochondrial function, worsening insulin resistance and inflammation
  • hsCRP - measures your level of inflammation in the body, often related to metabolic dysfunction (obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, leaky gut, Alzheimer's, obstructive sleep apnea)
  • Vitamin D (Cholecalciferol D3 and D2) and Vitamin D, 25-OH, Total - Healthy Vit D levels improve insulin sensitivity, while low vitamin D levels promote inflammation in the body. Adequate Vit D Levels has been shown to lower fasting glucose levels and the incidence of Type 2 Diabetes.

From the above we can also calculate the following measures that indicate levels of insulin resistance: Triglyceride/HDL Ratio (studies have shown that this value is a key ratio that correlates well with underlying insulin resistance), and HOMA-IR (calculated from Glucose and Insulin levels - [There are] marked changes in the HOMA 2 scores in the patients that progress to the overt hyperglycemic stage of type 2 diabetes up to 15 years before diabetes diagnosis by glycemic parameters, which remained mostly in the normal range during this anterior period of time).

DETAILS

*Who Should Have the Insulin Resistance Blood test Done?
-Almost every patient can benefit from an Insulin Resistance test. 1 in 3 Americans have Insulin resistance. -Some patients are looking to achieve optimal health, while other patients have been chronically ill and frustrated without a diagnosis for years.

Some conditions that warrant testing are:
-Abdominal Fat, or truncal obesity
-PCOS
-Overweight or Obese
-Sugar cravings
-Sleepiness after meals and fatigue
-skin tags around the neck, armpits and groin
-frequent urination at night
-high blood pressure
-brain fog, blurred vision
-And anyone who wants to prevent most chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, stroke, cancer, etc etc.

Do this test at least annually to determine if your need to alter your diet and lifestyle.

Important Info
